Successful Art = Emotional Response

Repeat it, and Remember it.

Horrid title, but bear with me here.  There is still beauty in this world.  Although understated it’s there.

What do I mean by “beautiful”?

Anything that can truly stir your emotions is beautiful.  It may not be cheerful, or make you thrilled, but if there is an emotion the artist has been successful.

There is a book coming out, a coffee table book of pictures.  Passe in description alone, I admit.  I saw a few photos from it, they are of India’s streetwalkers, the lines that life has left etched on their faces tells so much more about their lives than one volume of any book. The beauty is there, in the viewers response to the images.

This is one of the reasons I’m not fond of generalized “hotel art”.  The whole genre’s purpose is to be pretty without any depth, to blend, to just be there.  It’s the trophy wife of the art world. Merely eye candy without any substance to it.

You can recognize it’s ‘pretty’ buy most have no emotional response to the prints or paintings.

An artist however who knows a bit about what their doing, aside from basic composition, is able to capture that essence in his/ her subject.  They look for it.  They look for what makes the subject unique.  The result at times can be rather disquieting, but when it’s done correctly it can stir your emotional response like a violin.
